The "free tool" trap, explained
The "free tool" trap, how free SEO tools funnel you into a $5k/mo retainer
Teardown · what not to do
The "free tool" trap, bait for a retainer you can't leave
That handy free SEO tool? It's rarely there to help you. It's the top of a sales funnel, free enough to hook you, limited enough to frustrate you, pointed straight at a $5,000-a-month retainer where you own nothing. Here's the model, laid bare.
The trick they sell
"Free keyword tool!" → "Upgrade for more searches" → "Book a free strategy call" → a $5k, $20k/mo retainer.
The free tool does just enough to make you feel behind, then hands you to sales. The whole thing is engineered to end in a monthly bill.
Why it fails you
Follow where it goes:
- You bleed cash. $5k, $20k a month, often on long contracts, frequently for thin work (see the "guaranteed rankings" teardown).
- You own nothing. The rankings, the tool access, the data, the leads, all on their side. Stop paying and it walks out the door with them.
- You're rented your own research. Tools like the big "question" services charge monthly for data you can't even export, and won't let you take it when you leave.
The tell: if a "free" tool won't let you keep what you make in it, it was never free, you were the product.
The honest way
Own the stack instead. That's the whole digiPeeps bet:
- Free tools that stay free, and grow into software you can host yourself. No bait-and-switch.
- Own your data. Your list, your rankings history, your research, yours, exportable, in your name, forever.
- No lock-in. Use us or leave us with everything. We even keep a backup you can grab any time.
- Real value, given away. Our whole playbook is free, the steps, not a locked demo. Pay us to do it, not to see it.
The gurus rent you a tool and bill you forever. We hand you the thing, keep it sharp, and it stays yours.
