The fake-reviews trick, and how to earn real ones
Teardown · what not to do
Buying and faking reviews, the trick that gets you fined and delisted
Reviews are gold, so the shortcut-sellers say buy them, gate them, or get your mates to post them. In Australia that's not just against Google's rules, it can breach consumer law. Here's why it backfires, and how to earn the real ones that actually last.
The trick they sell
The pitch comes in a few flavours, all dishonest:
- "Buy 20 five-star reviews to get you started."
- "Only send the review link to customers you know are happy" (review-gating).
- "Get staff, family and mates to post, and swap reviews with other businesses."
Why it fails you
It breaks Google's rules AND Australian law. Google prohibits fake, incentivised and gated reviews, and filters or removes them. Worse, the ACCC treats fake or misleading reviews as deceptive conduct under Australian Consumer Law, with real penalties for businesses that do it.
- Google filters them out. Bursts of reviews from new or linked accounts get detected and stripped, you paid for nothing, and you've flagged your profile.
- Suspension risk. Enough policy breaches and the whole listing can be suspended, taking your real reviews offline with it.
- Customers can smell it. Twenty five-star reviews in a week with generic wording fools no one and quietly kills trust.
The honest way
Real reviews out-perform fakes and can never be taken away from you. Build the habit:
- Ask everyone, not just the happy ones. A simple, consistent ask after every job, gating (only asking the pleased ones) is itself against the rules. Trust your work.
- Make it one tap. Use your Google review link (or a QR code on the invoice). The easier it is, the more you get.
- Reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, helpful reply to a bad one wins more trust than a wall of five stars.
- Never pay or incentivise. No discounts-for-reviews, no swaps. Ever.
- Keep it steady. A few genuine reviews a month, forever, beats a fake spike that gets wiped.
Real reviews compound; fake ones evaporate. Ours is the slow way that can't be knocked over, and can't get you fined.
