Does your business need a chatbot? A five-minute gut check

Chatbots have a mixed reputation, and some of it is earned. A bad chatbot is an obstacle — a wall of canned replies between a customer and an answer. A good one is the opposite: it's the staff member who never clocks off.

So before you add one, it's worth a quick, honest gut check.

Five questions to ask

Answer these about your business:

  1. Do visitors ask the same handful of questions over and over? (Pricing, hours, "do you service my area?", "how does it work?")
  2. Do enquiries arrive outside business hours — evenings, weekends — and sit unanswered until morning?
  3. Is your first response time slower than you'd like?
  4. Does someone on your team spend real hours each week answering repetitive messages?
  5. Would capturing a name and email from an after-hours visitor be worth money to you?

If you said yes to three or more, a chatbot will likely earn its keep.

What a good chatbot actually does

It isn't there to replace your team or fake a human conversation. Its job is narrower and more useful:

Done well, the visitor barely notices it's automated. They just got helped quickly.

Where chatbots earn the most

The clearest wins tend to be businesses with after-hours interest — trades, clinics, hospitality, real estate, professional services. Someone visits at 9pm, has one question standing between them and an enquiry, and there's nobody to ask. That's a lead you were always going to lose. A chatbot turns it into a name in your inbox by morning.

Where they don't

If your enquiries are low-volume and highly bespoke, or your visitors always need a real conversation first, a chatbot adds little. That's a perfectly fine answer — the goal is more leads, not more technology.

The honest summary

A chatbot is a tool, not a strategy. But for the right business it's one of the cheapest ways to stop losing leads to the clock. The five questions above will tell you, in about five minutes, whether you're that business.

Not sure? Ask us — we'll give you a straight answer, even if it's "you don't need one."
